Boca de Tinajones

Municipality: San Bernardo del Viento

The mouth of Tinajones is a place of great geographical and ecological importance located in San Onofre. It is the first of the three mouths that the Sinú River created to flow into the sea, after changing its course and leaving its initial mouth in Cispatá Bay on June 13, 1942. Before this change, the area where the mouth of Tinajones is located was known as the Turn of Tinajones, due to the shape that the river adopted at that point, similar to the figure of a jar. It was here that the river, which flowed in a northerly direction, came closer to the sea before turning west towards Cispatá. It was at the Vuelta de Tinajones that local fishermen opened a channel known as "the trench" to allow communication between the river and the sea. Over time, the river eroded the banks and created a new wide mouth that opened to the Caribbean Sea. For some time, both mouths coexisted, but eventually the mouth of Tinajones became the main mouth of the Sinú River. The mouth of Tinajones is surrounded by an impressive mangrove forest, which houses a variety of species such as red mangrove, black smoke mangrove, pineapple mangrove and mangrove Zaragoza. These mangroves are fundamental to the ecosystem, as they provide shelter and food for a great diversity of flora and fauna. As for birds, the mouth of Tinajones is an ornithological paradise, with the presence of 221 different species, 35 of which are migratory. Among the migratory birds are the red heron, the chavarrí, the shamon of the Caribbean, the empty cabecinegro, the esperalda piquirroja, the batará laughter and the Caribbean guacharaca. These birds find in this environment the ideal habitat to rest, feed and reproduce during their migration. The mouth of Tinajones is a place of great importance both for the local community and for the conservation of biodiversity. Its natural beauty and ecological richness make it an ideal destination for bird watching, scientific research and ecotourism. In addition, its history linked to the change of course of the Sinú River gives it a significant historical and cultural value. Boca de Tinajones in San Bernardo del Viento is a fascinating place that combines geographical, ecological and historical elements. From its formation as a result of the change in the course of the Sinú River, to its lush mangrove forest and abundant bird life, this site captivates visitors and provides a unique experience in contact with nature and the history of the region.
