The swamp, with an area of approximately 41 hectares, is characterized by its abundant presence of mangroves due to its estuarine location, where fresh and salt waters mix depending on the tides and rainfall. This environment is the natural habitat of various species, including iguanas, monkeys, howler monkeys and howler monkeys.
In addition to the terrestrial fauna, the marsh is home to a great variety of birds, with herons being the most prominent. Among the species present are the red heron (Agamía agamí), the cheleca (Aramides cajanea), the coquito heron (Phimosus infuscatus), the jacana (Jacana jacana), among others.
