El Baile del Mapalé

Municipality: Moñitos

The mapalé is an Afro-Colombian dance rhythm that invites you to enjoy the party, the revelry and the enjoyment. It is characterized by its great scenic force, with short steps, an accelerated rhythm and a constant clapping. It arose on the Colombian Caribbean Coast as a result of the influence of the African slaves brought during the colonial era. These slaves escaped from their captors and founded communities known as palenques, such as the famous Palenque de San Basilio. The mapalé was practiced mainly during the nights, when the black maroons in the palenques finished their journey for the day. The dance begins with two lines, men and women, facing each other. The men make free and individual exhibition figures with the purpose of pleasing their partners, who take turns to reciprocate. The rhythm of the dance is very fast and ends in a frenzy, with movements of the pelvis that are propelled into the open legs of the dancers, dragging their feet to the beat of the percussion. The women's movements are more erotic, adding a touch of sensuality to the dance. The mapalé represents an erotic encounter between men and women, loaded with overacting and gestures. The fast pace and sudden, unexpected movements add to the energy and intensity of the dance. As for the costumes, women wear short skirts with fringes and decorations, while men wear ankle-length pants with fringes and a bare chest. In summary, the mapalé is an artistic and cultural expression that reflects the African heritage in the music and dance of the Colombian Caribbean Coast. Its energetic rhythm, fast and sensual movements, and striking costumes make mapalé a vibrant experience full of life.
