It is the oldest municipality in the Department of Sucre, it has one of the largest biotic reserves in the Department, the main activity is mining with the exploitation of limestone.

Initially these lands were inhabited by indigenous communities and had a place to practice their ceremonies. Later, it was discovered by Pedro de Heredia and Alfonso de Heredia, who gave it the name of Villa San José de Tolúviejo, due to the date of its discovery and the name of the Tolua cacique, who represented the community settled there.
